Went to see Star Trek this Monday, despite the fact that the semester finishes in two weeks and I've still got tonns of work to do. This is just some random rants, nothing much about the actual movie.
I've never been a fan of the Star Trek franchise. Of course I've seen the TV shows years ago, but I never fully understood what it was about (or Star Wars for that matter, before I finally saw the movies in logical order and cleared up some confusions).
The movie was great. Sure it doesn't follow the canon and it's got plot holes, but entertainment wise, it was a blast, and good reboot. I can see the later movies doing fine as long as they don't go stupid and ruin it with bad script or special effect scenes that goes on forever.
Jim Kirk was played by a Tremor brother from Smokin' Aces, which I did not realise until I read his IMDB profile. He just looks ordinarily-hollywood, not particularly good looking or memorable.
It was quite amusing when I first saw my Sylar, Zachery Quinto, as Spock with his bowl haircut, but I wouldn't mind seeing his bowl haircut more. It was a bit weird watching an expressionless pointy-eared guy kissing though. The love felt thrown-in out of nowhere. There should be at least "some" hint of it when they were at the academy, when JTK was hitting on the girl.
Scotty and Chekov were funny, Chekov with his overdone Russian accent which gave me a hard time understanding. Uhura was a vase, her ability should be more touched upon next time. Sulu was also a man-vase. I suggest they give him more stylish fighting scenes, and save Jim/someone else in the next movie, instead of the other way around.
Karl Urban (Bones) slightly resembles Gary Sinise especially in the movie, so I get the idea when someone said Gary Sinise should play the part. Too bad GS is too old to be part of the Enterprise now -- he's one of my favourite actors.
Also, Eric Bana was in the movie? Yeah, ain't I fast to find out he played Nero-the-baddy. It's just like Edison Chan's famous three seconds TDK scene -- everyone else except me saw the security guard.
